MARTIN REV - "MARTIN
REV"
Cat.# RUSCD 8279 - Release Date: October 29th, 2002
ROIR is proud to release Martin Rev’s self-titled solo debut album, originally released in 1979 on Charles Ball’s Lust/Unlust label, now with 5 bonus tracks (3 unreleased & exclusive). Rev is best known for his confrontational work with Alan Vega as Suicide; considered one of the most influential bands of the last 30 years. This record, somewhere between the harsh sound of Rev’s early work with Suicide and his more melodic, solo material ("See Me Ridin’"), is concrete evidence of how influential Rev’s dirty American-motorik music really was.
If you have any interest in today’s hot new thing, Electro-Clash, or wonder why journalists call Suicide the ‘Kraftwerk of the states’ (or why Ralf & Florian strong-armed copies of Suicide’s first album from Lester Bangs), or where in hell new-wave, synth-pop, and industrial music came from, this seminal release from Rev will answer all your questions, yet beg you to ask another: "who hasn’t this guy influenced?"
And as if Rev’s solo album isn’t exciting enough, Suicide will be releasing their first new album in nearly a decade. Expect "American Supreme" (Mute/Blast First) October 29th followed by an international tour.
Perhaps the most influential group to emerge from the New York punk scene. Suicide pioneered everything from synth-pop to industrialized disco with its low rent electronic angst-fest. - Rolling Stone

What ya’ll said about our last Martin Rev release, See Me Ridin’
From the good:
"Fuckin’ perfect! Certainly, if this was the warbling of some teenaged kid in the mental institution it’d’ve been released on Matador and written up in Spin post-haste."—Your Flesh
"Think Phil Spector conducting the Star Wars Cantina Band. Ten best of 1996."—Roy Trakin, Hits
"Martin Rev was on fire in Suicide and he’s still smoldering."—Great God Pan
To the bad (and really bad):
"This is very bad because it’s very stupid. I say ‘Assassinate this guy and make sure he never writes another song again!’ I’d knock him on his ass if I saw him ridin’. GOD I HATE THIS!"—FOE
"This is awful…so bad that naïve would be a compliment…Three of these dismal tracks are even produced by New York’s Charles Ball, who released Rev’s far superior debut on his Lust/Unlust label in 1979…Martin oh Martin, are you a fool for love, or just a fool?"—Exclaim!
"Blasphemy, plain and simple…Pathetic. Makes me physically nauseous."—Spank
"…one-paced and one dimensional. One Star."—Q
"…simply unsettling…"—CMJ Monthly
"One album that even I couldn’t sit through. A definite case for staying retired."—Tail Spins
"They (the songs) suck—Martin Rev should turn off the oldies station before he goes to bed…ROIR probably figured it could make some money on some poor saps new to the scene."—U.S. Rocker
To the completely baffled:
"It’s either really good, really bad or a joke."—Roctober
"either brilliantly minimalist or infantile as all get out. It does, however, have the virtue of sounding like nothing else around at the moment."—Stereo Review
"Pretty…um…different."—More Than Music
"…call it thinking in the rain."—Manhattan Mirror
"…slightly beyond belief…sort of pointless."—Puncture
"It could happen to you too."—Endangered Species
Congratulations to Martin—still divisive and still relevant
