(by Scott Briggs - from The Big Takeover , magazine USA)
What originally drew me to this band was being a veteran Sisters of Mercy fan and reading Andrew Eldritch's comments explaining that the main reason the Sisters formed was that "everyone loved Suicide." One couldn't ask for a better recommendation. So, when I heard that Suicide were doing a free show, I felt it my duty to attend, and finally see the legendary band live. The show was brief, barely an hour, but it was nice to see they’re still taking chances. I walked into the gallery and gazed at the minimalist amp stack and Rev's keyboard stand and wondered if I wasn't hallucinating the whole thing.
Suicide appeared suddenly and attacked the small crowd with what appeared to be all new material, sounding like Nine Inch Nails meets oblivion. That the band can still seem ahead of their time is encouraging. Even the classic "Ghost Rider" was deconstructed into a fiery Vega rant exclaiming "the whole world now is killing its youth." This is one band that will never degenerate into a nostalgia act. Seeing Vega stalk the stage and Marty Rev pounding the keyboards behind his shades was alone worth the cab fare. Hopefully their upcoming album is as challenging as ever, and that they return for some lengthier shows and show the latest wave of techno kiddies how it's done.
